Our story at Le Bon Pain Bakery

Discover the rich history and passionate journey behind Le Bon Pain Bakery. From our family roots to our dedication to the Lower Hutt community, we're more than just a bakery.

From humble beginnings to a community favourite

The roots of Le Bon Pain Bakery trace back through generations of the De Leon family. Seeking a new beginning, the family immigrated to New Zealand from Vietnam, bringing with them a passion for baking and treasured traditional recipes inspired by both French and Vietnamese cuisine. For more than 30 years, Le Bon Pain Bakery proudly served the communities of Lower Hutt and Wellington, supplying freshly baked bread, pastries, pies, and other handcrafted products. After three decades, the family made the heartfelt decision to retire.

A new chapter with Steven and Mel

Steven had the ambitious idea of owning and running his own bakery, and with Mel’s support, they took the leap and began their journey at Le Bon Pain  December 2026. Steven brings more than 12 years of baking experience, while Mel brings extensive knowledge of retail and food service from her time working as a deli manager. Together, they share a passion for creating delicious homemade breads, sweet treats, and quality baked goods for the local community to enjoy.
